In Vietnam, they are successfully pursuing other paths.
The poster by the artist Le Duc Hiep (below) is just one of many art forms that have emerged in Vietnam in a very short time – from hand-washing songs to special stamp designs – reflecting the wartime spirit that many in the country invoke when trying to contain the current crisis.
What unites every art form is the depiction of people wearing masks. This is an integral part of everyday life in Vietnam.
With its archetypal propaganda aesthetic, nationalist tone and heroic figures, one could assume that Hiep’s poster was created by the Ministry of Information. In reality, he chose a design that he thought would appeal to people because it looked familiar to them.
